West Yellowstone, MT

It's nice when we don't have so far to go to our next stop in our travels. We sat around for awhile, had coffee, ate breakfast, and watched some of the Today Show before packing up and heading out at about 9:30 yesterday. The trip to West Yellowstone was only about an hour and a half, but we dragged it out to 2 hours. We had a stop at a rest area that was in a nice location:

The entire trip was through rain and low clouds which prevented us from taking good photos of this beautiful part of our country. We will definitely return during the summer and capture this beauty that was hidden from us yesterday. We did take some shots while traveling along Hebgen Lake just before arriving in West Yellowstone:

This reminded us a lot of Lake Chelan in WA with the water between steep slopes of the mountains.

We finally arrived in West Yellowstone and set up our rig at a new campground next to the IMAX Theatre in town. Our site is a very nice one, and we are only about a block from the west entrance to Yellowstone:

After our set-up, we headed to the Park for our first time in 2013:

Since we only had a half day yesterday, we didn't expect to see a lot of wildlife but, as usual when we come here, we were pleasantly surprised. It was only a short distance into the Park when we spotted this lone, young cow elk grazing along the side of the road:

It was another short distance and we spotted our first bison of 2013:

They were a small group just relaxing along the river with their  new calves.

About another couple hundred yards down the road we spotted this group of bison that were grazing along with some elk:

Once again, there were several calves and it appears that it was a banner year for bison birthing calves:

And there were more bison as we traveled toward the Madison Junction in the Park:

We traveled a little bit farther north and visited the Gibbon Falls for the first time. They have a brand new visitor's area where you can walk several hundred yards along the gorge to see the falls:

Our final stop before turning around to head back to the rig was at this geyser that was bubbling and steaming:

What a great start to our 2013 adventure in the Yellowstone Park/Northwest Wyoming area for our summer stay. We have one more full day today to visit the Park and we expect some more good photos of the beauty and wildlife in this favorite area of ours...
