Snake River Rafting

The first order of business yesterday was to drop off the Jeep at the dealership nearby for a much needed tune up and to have some other necessary services performed. That was at 8 AM and we then went about a mile toward town to Hansen's Whitewater Trips:

We arrived at around 8:15 and instead of waiting an hour or so to get started on the trip details, we walked to a local bagel shop around the corner and had some coffee and a bagel. At 9 AM we went back to Hansen's and did the paperwork (disclaimers for the trip) and were given wet suits to change into and wear during the trip. We each wore bathing suits under our clothes so we could change into dry clothes after the trip. Here's a shot of Josie in her wetsuit:

The bus left on schedule and we drove to a spot about 15 miles south of town. Of course, I didn't take the camera because it would have been ruined with all the water splashing on us and into the boat. The whitewater rafting trip was outstanding - and it was complimentary for us as employees of the Virginian Lodge. It was much, much faster and with many more huge rapids than our other trip in Cody a couple years ago. The trip was 8 miles on the Snake River and our guide was fabulous, as he prepared us well for the rapids and gave very interesting dialogue all along the way about the river features and history associated with the River. There was a location along the way where a professional photographer took pictures (from the shore) of our boat going through one of the largest rapids and we got to view those pictures on a computer following the trip. We ordered a series of 5 pictures that will be ready for us to pick up today after noon. The problem is that we don't have any to post on the blog, but we will try to capture the series of pictures, somehow, to reproduce on the blog. The entire trip lasted until after 1 PM when we arrived back at the shop.

Our next stop was to get some lunch in town and we spotted a neat place just before the bus parked back at the shop. It was called the New York City Sub Shop and they had this sign outside which was enough for us to see:

It did not disappoint. It was definitely one of the best and it was served on their own homemade bread (rolls) that was terrific. We'll be back again, for sure.

The final activity of the day was to try to find the famous barn that is located in the Grand Tetons National Park and appears in many photos of the Tetons. We were given an idea of where it was located by one of our co-workers and we went to try and find it. It is located off of one of the side roads near Moose Junction which is close to the Jackson Hole Airport. We did find it. I won't show any of the pictures that we took since they were taken late in the day and the sun was behind the barn and, also, slightly behind the mountains, so they don't do justice for the scene. We went out early this morning - the reason for the late blog entry today - to get some shots with the early sun. We did get better shots that we will post tomorrow, and the timing was good as the clouds rolled in shortly after that.

One thing we discovered while searching for the barn was that the area contained a lot of wildlife. We took these shots of the bison that were everywhere:

A final shot was taken of this flower that is what we believe a Mules-ear Wyethia. They were all over the side of the road and were very pretty:

We have lots of pictures that we took this morning and we will show those tomorrow. We saw more bison, some elk, prairie dogs and the biggest surprise of all was spotting the cow moose and her calf that we spoke about last week. They had moved a long distance to the other side of the road and were slowly walking away into the deep forest. They were too far away to get shots, but we now know they are moving to their new range. Oh, and the Jeep is still at the shop as they need to get some parts in to finish service on the transmission differential. It was a great day...
