Chapel of the Transfiguration

We usually try to take advantage of the free time we have in the morning before we have to go to work at 3 PM. There had been a place we have been passing as we go in and out of the Tetons that we wanted to see, so yesterday was the day. It is called the Chapel of the Transfiguration and the Menor's Ferry Historic District.

It was only about a 20 minute drive from us and is located just inside the southern entrance to the Park. The Chapel is a functioning Episcopal Church and has a long history in the area. The location of the Chapel speaks for itself:

The inside of the Chapel is very simple, and there was even an organist playing as we entered:

One of the most unique features was the glass window behind the alter which gave a fabulous view of the mountains that could be enjoyed by the whole congregation during services:

That is enough to invite everybody to Sunday services.

The Chapel was one building in this Historic District that was home to a wealthy "easterner" named Maude Nobel, who was instrumental in providing the means for the powers to be to plan and execute the development of this area into the Grand Teton National Park. This is a shot of her home (cabin):

The property also was the location of the ferry that was constructed to carry individuals and vehicles-of-the-day across the Snake River. It was managed and operated by an individual named William Menor who operated a general store on the premisses in addition to the ferry. Here are some shots of the ferry:

and Menor's cabin and general store:

The general store is still in operation as there were some nice jelly's and other local fare being sold. There were other things happening around us as we were walking around this area in the Park. There were Float trips going by as we walked near the river:

and these horseback riders that were heading into the forest behind the cabins:

It was a very interesting and informative trip and a great way to spend a couple hours before work.

Today is the big 4th of July celebration in town and we plan to take advantage of our free time this morning to enjoy the parade. Unfortunately, the fireworks have been cancelled for this evening as a result of the dry terrain and all the fires that are currently burning in Wyoming and other areas of the west. There just hasn't been enough moisture. Anyway, have a great 4th everybody...
