Drive Through Canyon

Even though the sun was shining in the morning, we knew that the lousy weather was on its way and would be here by mid-day. Josie opted to finish up her afghan in the morning:

It turned out really nice and she is getting ready to start on another.

Rather than stay home and waste a day off, we chose to take a short drive to Alpine, WY which is about 25 miles south of Jackson. There were some areas we wanted to check out and by driving it didn't matter if it rained on us.

The drive south through the canyon is always a pretty drive. The road follows the Snake River for about 12 miles between the towns of Hoback and Alpine. This is also the area of the river where we have taken our whitewater rafting trips the last two years and we saw many rafters on the river while driving through the canyon yesterday. There are several turnouts along the way, so we stopped at a couple of them and took these shots of some rafters and of the beautiful river:

There is also a nice Resort that sits on the river near Alpine that is called the Flying Saddle Resort and had been advertising recently for front desk help. The address is given as Jackson, WY, but it lies on the edge of Alpine. It is a very nice resort and we snapped a couple pictures of some nice pieces they had outside in a beautiful courtyard area:

It would be a wonderful place to work if we were to apply and be accepted, but we would have to find a place to stay with our fifth wheel which, of course, is residing in Jackson - for free. At least we know more about the resort now and can recommend it to folks when we are sold out.

There was another place we wanted to stop to check out, and that is the A-OK Corral which is closer to Jackson and is one of the several horseback riding opportunities in the area. We wanted to see the operation and also check to see if we might be able to get a "comp" ride as front desk employees of the Virginian Lodge. The attraction for us is that they ride through some beautiful country that is just south of Jackson Hole. Here are a couple shots:

We talked to the person in charge and she said we could certainly schedule a comp ride with them with just a one day notice. We expect to take advantage of that offer in the next week or so.

The weather turned sour during our drive home and we ended the day with a stop at the DQ in town for a Blizzard treat to end the day.

It is cloudy again this morning and the forecast is for more rain, so we haven't decided yet on any activity for today - our second and final off day this week...
