Animal Kingdom

We finally made it to one of the theme parks at Disney - Animal Kingdom - and it was a great first choice to the parks we haven't seen. It was a little late when we got started in the morning but we arrived at 11:30. We had packed a lunch in order to save the money from the concessions inside, so we ate our lunch while in the parking lot before going in. So, around noon, we walked through the entrance:

and went right to the Discovery Island section. This was very near the front of the park and the signature of this area is the huge tree - the tree of life:

Up close, you can see all kinds of figures carved into the trunk and roots of the tree:

The inside of the base of the tree is a theater where they had a 3D show entitled "It's Tough To Be a Bug". It was a wonderful show with the characters from the movie "It's a Bug's World", and was very entertaining.

The next area we visited was called "Africa" where the main attraction was a Kilimanjaro Safari through what was called the Harambe Wildlife Reserve:

There were animals everywhere and we took lots of pictures, but instead of showing pictures of animals that are very common, I inserted just the following from this portion of the visit. The first is a shot of one of the busses like the one we took:

and this one of a very rare animal, called an okapi, that is like a giraffe and was one we had never seen before:

It was a fun drive through this preserve and, following that,  we walked through some forest trails, also within the Africa area. One part of this section contained an area of gorillas, which were roaming all over:

We really enjoyed this area of the park.

The next stop was a very popular section called "Asia", where we had to try the attraction called "Kali River Rapids". Of course, after our experience on the river in Cody last year, these rapids were a piece of cake. Not true. It was a thrilling ride through some pretty tough water and everybody in the boat got drenched. You can see from this next shot that some people came prepared for the soaking:

These nice folks offered to take our picture, which really doesn't show the wettest part of our bodies - our backs and bottoms:

There was a parade that went around the park at about this time, but the shots we got weren't the best since we weren't in the front along the roped-in areas. It was all about Lion King characters and the music from that show. We stopped only for a short time to watch it while on our way to the main attraction in this area called "Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden Mountain". Below is a shot from a distance where you can make out the train climbing up the mountain to start the run:

This was probably the fastest, scariest ride we have ever taken in any park. The train went super fast, around tight curves, and even stopped in one area to reverse itself and travel backwards, at a high speed, through the darkness inside the mountain. Quite an experience.

We then went to the final area that we visited called "DinoLand USA". Here, we went to an excellent show - "Finding Nemo - the Musical" - and even though we weren't allowed to use flash cameras, I was able to get this shot (without the flash) of this clever production:

All of the characters (fish) were portrayed by individuals with the clever use of high wire to show the fish swimming and poles, with controls on them to manipulate mouth movements of the fish. Very entertaining.

The last attraction we went to was another ride, through ancient dinosaur country, and it reminded us of the Indiana Jones ride at Universal Studios in LA. The only attraction we missed because we ran out of time was the "Festival of the Lion King" that was in the Camp Minnie-Mickey area. We'll have to do that another time.

The whole day was enjoyable and our total cost, including parking and entrance fees, was $7.50, which we spent on 2 ice cream cones while there. I like this Disney free pass stuff. Today we plan to go to the "Hollywood Studios" park since we have never been there and will save the Epcot Center and Magic Kingdom for last, probably this weekend or early next week. Until tomorrow...
