First Solo Day

Yesterday was our first day of working the 8 hour day shift alone. Chelsie, the managers' daughter, is now on her trip in Costa Rica, and Josie and I had to man the front desk alone. Of course, Judie, the manager, was in the office and available for any questions or help. We didn't need her very much even though we were very busy and had some unique situations that we were able to handle ourselves. There were 122 checkouts that we processed and we checked-in another 10 or so before we left for the day at 3 PM. In the middle of all the normal checkouts and check-ins, we keyed the tour bus that was due in around 3 PM, kept the hot water and coffee containers filled in the lobby, did our shift reports and handled all the phone calls for reservations, etc. The tour buses arrive daily and we have envelopes that need the room keys placed in them for each guest that arrives with the tour. Normally, there are about 25 rooms assigned to the daily tours. When the bus arrives, the plastic tray containing the envelopes is handed to the Tour Director and he takes over from there to make sure all his people get settled in the proper rooms. It is a very good system.

Today we get a small breather as we don't start work until 3 PM. There may be a short trip squeezed in before work, but for the most part, we will watch the Olympics which are in full swing. As usual, there are pleasant surprises along with the disappointments among the performances. Fortunately, there are more pleasant surprises than disappointments. Our team should feel proud.

The first full week in August wraps up today and we are still searching for the right combination for the winter months. We sent an email to the HR person at Amazon in Fernley, NV, informing them of our change in plans and requested their help in inquiring about opportunities in the Goodyear, AZ fulfillment center that has just been expanded. Even though they don't have a workamper program, they do hire seasonal help to get through the peak holiday season. With our experience and excellent record with them in Campbellsville, we thought we might have a chance to join their seasonal staff in AZ this year. We're still waiting to hear back on that. It would be a nice surprise if we can somehow pull that off for this season...
