Exploring Mesquite

The order for the day yesterday was to drive around the town of Mesquite to get a feel for its retirement qualities. There is a Del Webb Community - Sun City Mesquite - that opened here in 2007 and we wanted to see how it compared to other Del Webb Communities we have seen - including how it compared to Sun City Grand in Surprise, AZ.

It is a totally different look as it is built among the high red rock ridges north of town.  We went into the sales office located in the clubhouse and did the usual check-in procedure of filling out the information sheet and being assigned a sales rep. The model homes - all 14 of them - ranged from the smallest at 1200 SF to the largest at over 3100 SF, and ranged in price (base price) from $158K to $365K. I must say, the prices do reflect the impact of the economy. The sales rep told us that she purchased one of the homes when it opened in 2007, and her model is $100K less than she paid back then.

It had all the usual Del Webb amenities and we took some shots of the views from some of the models, but this one kind of represents the typical view, with the beautiful golf course below:

It was an interesting couple of hours and we were able to ward-off the sales pressure and the added sales incentives. If we were in a buying mode, it would have been difficult to say no.

We are getting a feel for the town itself and it has some promise for the future as a winter location. The town is convenient to Las Vegas and St George, UT and has a lot going for it, but we are not ready to seriously look at any winter home at this point.

There are a few places that appear to be interesting that provide choices for today. One is the Valley of Fire State Park and the other is the Gold Butte Byway- both of which are within easy driving distance of Mesquite. Whatever the choice, we will be enjoying another sunny day in southern Nevada...
