Wow! We woke up to 35 degrees outside this morning -Bob is doing this post with the fireplace on. Our poor tomato plants are being challenged between the gopher and the near freezing temperature. The front went through yesterday with a fury - no rain but winds in the 30-35 MPH range. We feel sorry for the folks who came up from the Valley, the hot Valley, to stay in tents at 35 degrees. That is such a contrast within 130 miles. Actually, once you travel off the Rim, to perhaps Camp Verde which is just 35 miles from here, you get temperatures that are close to the Valley temperatures. Our high yesterday was only 75 degrees, but very windy.
This weekend is strange in that we have most of our sites booked but no huge events. That keeps it pretty quiet. The Ramada is not booked and neither is the banquet room. There are several small family groups that are gathering at one of the family member sites but, so far, they are well behaved. The store was kind of slow yesterday and will most likely be the same today. Several times yesterday Bob caught himself talking like it was Monday. After all, Friday is like our Monday since our weekend is really Wed and Thu. People would come in and ask when the restaurant was going to be open and Bob would say "not until Thursday night" but it was actually open last night and will also be open Sat and Sun AM for breakfast and Sat night for dinner.
The Forest Service people are performing controlled burns in a couple areas fairly close to the Lodge and it will be interesting to find out how much the high winds affected their activity yesterday. The local Ranger comes into the store daily to drop off reports of these burns for the benefit of the people that use the trails for their ATV's and other off road vehicles. We have seen some smoke from these burns at various times but nothing to be concerned about - so far.
That's about it for today. Brrr!...
