Our day went rather smoothly yesterday until about 15 minutes before closing. Josie and I were closing together as we have for several other evenings this season. Josie ran into a situation where the computer locked up on a credit card transaction. I had already closed the first register and this meant we couldn't do any more transactions until the problem was fixed or we reopened the first register. As luck would have it, the company computer tech was not available - it was near 7 PM - and we had to call our manager to get advice. She tried to talk us through some attempts to get it working again, to no avail. I ended up shutting down the computer altogether at the risk of losing all the data from the business day. I restarted the system, brought up our application, and completed the procedures for closing with what appears to be a normal close to the day. Phew!
That is one problem when we - or anyone else - close so late in the day. There is no technical support available in case of problems like these. I'm sure that management will set up some kind of procedure to cover these situations. It is the first time it has happened to us.
Today, we begin our two days of opening before we get our "weekend" starting on Monday. It was tough ending the day the way we did last night and getting up early this morning to open the business day at 7:45 AM. That's the way it goes sometimes...
