Winter in Ely, NV

As we had to travel another 150 miles more yesterday than we traveled on Monday, we got an earlier start - 8:30. The drive was through Las Vegas and we picked up US 93 just north of town and traveled the back country road all the way to Ely, NV. The drive was not boring at all as there were unusual mountain formations and desert fauna the whole way. It was mostly uphill though, as our mileage was very poor for the day - less than 7 mpg with the truck. Here is a shot that Josie took while following me:

There wasn't much traffic at all on this little used route through Nevada. We were amazed that at least 9 out of 10 vehicles that passed us had plates from Canada - B.C. and Alberta. It is obviously a popular route for the Canadian Snowbirds.

Ely, NV is at an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet, so we shouldn't have been surprised when we saw all the snow as we entered the town at around 3:30 PM:

The campground where we had planned to stay didn't have a suitable site for our rig, so we went down the street to the Prospector Hotel, Casino and RV Park:

and we were able to select a good site for the night:

It was very cold - in fact, the temperature dropped to 29 overnight - but we enjoyed the night here. We played a little bit in the small Casino where Josie continued her streak by winning a small pot, and we had dinner in the restaurant which we felt was a pretty good deal.

We travel to Hagerman, ID today which is about a 280 mile trip. It will be a shorter day on the road so we are happy about that. We just hope that the weather cooperates but we are prepared as we both have switched from our AZ shorts to long pants for winter weather weather travel...
