It was made official yesterday - there is mandatory overtime for all shifts this week. The overtime is voluntary for the workampers, but we feel that it is a good push for us to work the extra time. The big difference is that the overtime day is Thursday, instead of Tuesday, when we have been taking it in the past. It doesn't make much difference except that we get our 2 days off this week starting tomorrow. Next week will be the long one with 5 straight days beginning on Thursday. The explanation for the overtime is to handle the extra merchandise being diverted here from the Indianapolis facility that is down for repairs. We wonder how those employees are handling their mandatory down time.
So far the experience here has been disappointing compared to last year. The management is different and there is very little acknowledgement for good performance. Perhaps it's because we are still early for the peak season and it will change when the big rush begins in October. We hope so. There is also a huge difference between the people on the day shift versus the night shift that we left. There doesn't seem to be the same camaraderie on the day shift. Maybe that will also change with the peak season. The other thing is that we only worked for about 7 weeks total last year, and this year we are more than tripling the experience. Right now we have already exceeded the time we were here last year - in fact, it is almost double the time. The time of the year is different and that also creates a different feeling. We were already into the Thanksgiving and Christmas season last year and that always makes for a more enjoyable experience. We'll see.
In the meantime, we only have one more day to go - today - and we can relax for 2 days. We're looking forward to that...
